How does Google work?

To explain it in the most simple form, Google sends out 'spiders' that crawl through new and old websites at varying intervals. Spiders can only see TEXT not photos or animations, this is important, as you will need to have a text rich website or optimised flash built website to feature as high as possible in Google searches.

For an example visit www.google.co.uk and type 'Website Design in Whitby' in to the search bar. You'll see that Esk247 is featured on the first page, sometimes among the top three results! Even for such queries as 'Website Design in Scarborough' Esk247 gets mentioned among the first 5 pages with very minimal expense in comparison to those around us.

How do Keywords work?

Keywords are just that. 'Key' words. They are associated with what your website is selling/promoting and they should appear at regular intervals through-out your website. BUT BE CAREFUL! You don't want to just fill a page with keywords and hope for the best, as you won't sell any products, you'll have a meaningless page of search engine babble and you'll start to fall back down the search results as your website becomes less interesting to visit.

How do we monitor Website Traffic?

Monitoring the traffic/flow of visitors to your website is fairly simple. We use Google Analytics. This allows us not just to see how many hits you get every day, week or month but how long they spend on your website, which pages they visit, which country and region they are from and this information can then be matched against your online sales records to check Conversion Rates.

What does Conversion mean?

Conversion is a visitor who is 'converted' in to a buyer. You can have ten thousand visitors, but if non are converted to buyers you have a problem, perhaps your website looks awful or the menu doesn't work, perhaps the customer thinks your product is over priced. The perfect scenario is ten thousands visitors and ten thousand buyers, but this never happens, so we aim to 'Convert' the maximum amount of visitors we can.

 

REMEMBER: SEO takes time! It requires analysis on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, as well as the setting of goals/targets. It costs money but it can ultimately generate money. In the ideal situation an SEO expert can pay for him/herself from the profits they make by optimising your website.
